Defining the AI Companion Market

Unlike standard productivity chatbots, AI companion apps focus on anthropomorphized interactions. These platforms allow users to engage with custom synthetic characters—ranging from friends and romantic partners to fantasy personas—designed to embody distinct personalities. Current industry leaders in this space include Replika, Character.AI, PolyBuzz, and Chai.

Rapid Growth in Downloads and Spending

As of July 2025, these applications have accumulated 220 million global downloads across the Apple App Store and Google Play. The first half of the year saw 60 million downloads, an 88% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Total consumer spending has hit $221 million, marking a 64% revenue surge year-over-year.

Market Concentration and Trends

Revenue is highly concentrated at the top of the market: the top 10% of apps account for 89% of total category earnings. Approximately 33 apps have already surpassed $1 million in lifetime consumer spending. Furthermore, efficiency is rising, with revenue per download climbing from $0.52 in 2024 to $1.18 in 2025.

Big Tech Enters the Fray

Major players are increasingly encroaching on this niche. xAI recently introduced companion characters to Grok, including an anime-style persona and a “snarky” 3D fox. Meanwhile, OpenAI faced significant user backlash following the transition to GPT-5, as many users felt a deep emotional dependency on previous iterations of the model. The outcry was significant enough that CEO Sam Altman reinstated the 4o model to address user concerns.

The Dominance of “Girlfriend” Apps

Market data suggests a clear consumer preference: 17% of active AI companion apps include the term “girlfriend” in their title. In contrast, only 4% explicitly market themselves as “boyfriend” or “fantasy” apps. Other identifiers, such as “soulmate” or “anime,” appear with lower frequency.
