Amazon officially launched Alexa+, its advanced generative AI-powered assistant, for all U.S. customers this Wednesday. The upgraded service is now included at no extra cost for Prime members across all compatible devices, while non-Prime users can access the tool via the official Alexa website and mobile application with specific usage limitations.

Intelligence Beyond Basics: A Model-Agnostic Approach
Unlike its predecessor, Alexa+ is built on a model-agnostic architecture. This allows the assistant to leverage a combination of Amazon’s proprietary foundation models and external AI technology to execute complex tasks more effectively. Daniel Rausch, VP of Alexa and Echo at Amazon, confirmed that tens of millions of customers have already engaged with the technology during its beta phase.
The new iteration enables natural, fluid conversations, supporting follow-up questions and back-and-forth interactions. Beyond standard smart home controls, weather reports, and timer management, Alexa+ now offers advanced capabilities, including:
- Trip itinerary planning.
- Collaborative calendar management.
- Recipe discovery and library saving.
- Homework assistance and complex topic exploration.
Furthermore, deep integrations with services like Ticketmaster, Thumbtack, Uber, Angi, Expedia, Square, Yelp, Fodor’s, OpenTable, and Suno empower the AI to perform “agentic” tasks, such as booking restaurant reservations or hailing rides autonomously.

Refining the Experience: Beta Feedback and Customization
Amazon spent the last year refining Alexa+ based on user feedback. Early testers noted issues with verbosity and inappropriate interruptions. To address this, Amazon introduced a “Is that for me?” verification prompt when the AI is uncertain about the target user.
Voice preference was another critical area of improvement. While the new AI voice offers enhanced inflection, Amazon maintained the “OG” Alexa voice as an option for those who prefer the classic sound. Users also retain granular control over the assistant, with the ability to toggle features like the “follow-on” listening mode.

Adoption Metrics and Future Personality Features
Data from the beta period indicates strong user engagement: music streams increased by 25%, and recipe-related interactions saw a 5x growth. On average, users are engaging in two to three times more conversations with Alexa+ than with the standard version. When asked if users might eventually customize the AI’s personality—ranging from “professional” to “quirky”—Rausch remained tight-lipped, simply stating, “Stay tuned.”
Availability and Pricing
Alexa+ is rolling out across the entire ecosystem, including Echo products, Fire TV, the Alexa mobile app, and partner devices from companies like Samsung and Bose. For those without a Prime membership, standalone access is available for $19.99 per month. While free tiers exist on the web and mobile, Amazon has implemented usage limits to prevent system abuse, though specific thresholds remain undisclosed.
