Apple officially unveiled the iPhone 16e this Tuesday, marking a major evolution for its budget-friendly smartphone lineup. Dropping the traditional “SE” branding to align with its flagship series, the device enters the market at a $599 starting price point, with shipping scheduled to begin on February 28.

Powering Apple Intelligence

The standout feature of the 16e is its full integration with Apple Intelligence. By incorporating the A18 processor—the same silicon driving the standard iPhone 16 lineup—the device supports advanced on-device AI tasks, including text summarization, content generation, and writing assistance. Users also gain free access to ChatGPT via Siri, bypassing the need for an individual OpenAI account.

Hardware Overhaul: Design and Connectivity

Apple has overhauled the device’s architecture to match contemporary standards:

  • Display: A 6.1-inch OLED screen, replacing the smaller 4.8-inch display found on the previous generation.
  • Biometrics: The physical Touch ID button is retired, replaced by Face ID via the TrueDepth camera system.
  • Connectivity: The Lightning port has been discarded in favor of universal USB-C.
  • Modem: The 16e is the first device to utilize Apple’s proprietary C1 modem, signaling a strategic move to reduce reliance on third-party suppliers like Qualcomm and Intel.

Camera and Battery Efficiency

The device features a 48-megapixel rear camera capable of 2x zoom and high-quality 24-megapixel image capture. Thanks to the energy efficiency of the six-core A18 chip and its 16-core neural engine, Apple claims the 16e offers the best battery life ever seen on a 6.1-inch iPhone, providing up to 12 hours more runtime than its predecessor.

Strategic Market Positioning

The launch comes at a critical juncture for Apple, which recently saw an 11% decline in market share within China due to increased competition from domestic rivals like Huawei. While the $599 price represents a $100 increase over the previous SE model, Apple is betting that the inclusion of cutting-edge AI features will bolster its position in China and India.

To combat local AI restrictions, the company is reportedly negotiating with regional partners, including Alibaba, to bring localized generative AI capabilities to the Chinese market.

Availability

Consumers can begin placing preorders for the iPhone 16e on Friday, February 21. Retail shipments will follow one week later, on February 28.
