Apple officially unveiled the AirPods Max 2 this Monday, marking the first major update to its premium over-ear headphones since their 2020 debut. Priced at $549, the new model integrates the powerful H2 chip, bringing advanced computational audio, live translation capabilities, and enhanced noise cancellation to the flagship lineup.

Enhanced Audio Performance and ANC
The AirPods Max 2 deliver a significant leap in acoustic performance. Apple reports that the Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) is now up to 1.5x more effective than the original version. This is bolstered by the new Adaptive Audio feature, which intelligently balances ANC and Transparency modes in real-time based on the user’s environment.
Transparency mode has also been refined through a new digital signal-processing algorithm. By leveraging the H2 chip and the optimized microphone array, the headphones allow for a more natural perception of the surrounding environment. For audiophiles, the new high-dynamic-range amplifier ensures cleaner output, while Spatial Audio has been upgraded to provide better instrument localization, punchier bass, and clearer mids and highs.
Advanced Features for Communication and Creation
Apple is positioning the AirPods Max 2 as a versatile tool for both daily communication and professional content creation. Key features include:
- Live Translation: Facilitates real-time communication across different languages.
- Voice Isolation: Uses advanced computational audio to prioritize the user’s voice during calls while aggressively suppressing background noise.
- Creator-Focused Mic: Designed to offer podcasters, singers, and interviewers a more natural vocal texture and higher audio fidelity.
- Loud Sound Reduction: Protects hearing from sudden, intense environmental noises without altering the signature of the audio being played.
Connectivity and Usability Upgrades
The AirPods Max 2 introduces Camera Remote functionality, allowing users to trigger the shutter on an iPhone or iPad by pressing the Digital Crown. This feature works with the native Camera app and various third-party alternatives. Additionally, the headphones support 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio when connected via the included USB-C cable.
Availability and Design
The headphones will be available in five distinct finishes: midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue. Pre-orders open on March 25, with a general retail launch scheduled for early next month across more than 30 countries and regions.
