Apple Unveils Real-Time Live Translation at WWDC 25 – Ankor Tech

Apple officially debuted its new Live Translation feature during WWDC 2025, introducing seamless, on-the-fly language conversion across Messages, FaceTime, and standard phone calls. By leveraging Apple-built models that operate entirely on-device, the company ensures that user privacy remains intact while breaking down global communication barriers.

Seamless Integration Across Apple Communication Apps

The new functionality is deeply integrated into the iOS ecosystem to provide a frictionless experience. In Messages, Live Translation works dynamically; as you type, your text is automatically converted into your preferred language. This process is mirrored when receiving messages, allowing for fluid, bilingual text conversations without leaving the app.

Revolutionizing FaceTime and Phone Calls

The impact of this technology extends beyond text. During FaceTime calls, the system generates live captions in real-time, assisting users in following conversations regardless of the spoken language.

For standard phone calls, the utility is even more profound. The system translates spoken words as they are uttered, broadcasting the translation aloud to the call recipient. When the other party responds in their native language, the user hears an immediate spoken translation of that voice. Crucially, this feature functions regardless of whether the recipient is an Apple device user or not.

Developer Access and Future Availability

Apple is positioning this as a platform-wide standard. Leslie Ikemoto, Apple’s director of input experience, confirmed that a new API will allow third-party developers to integrate this live translation capability directly into their own communication applications.

While the feature marks a significant leap in mobile accessibility, Apple has not yet disclosed the specific list of languages that will be supported at launch. Further details regarding regional availability and language expansion are expected to follow as the integration rolls out.
