Apple is set to launch a new feature in Apple Wallet that allows U.S. users to store digital versions of their passports. Announced by Jennifer Bailey, VP of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, at the Money 20/20 USA conference, this update aims to streamline security screenings at select TSA checkpoints for domestic travel.

Expanding Digital Identity Beyond Payments

This integration marks a significant shift for the Apple Wallet, evolving it from a simple payment tool into a comprehensive secure identity hub. While the feature was initially teased as part of the iOS 26 release, it was excluded from the initial rollout, with Apple confirming it will arrive in a forthcoming software update.

Currently, Apple Wallet supports government-issued IDs in 12 states and Puerto Rico, covering roughly one-third of U.S. license holders. The addition of passport-linked IDs provides a critical alternative for travelers, especially as Real ID rules—enforced since May—have rendered many standard state-issued IDs insufficient for airport security.

Utility at TSA Checkpoints

Although these digital IDs will not replace physical U.S. passports, they are designed to expedite the verification process at TSA checkpoints. When combined with existing support for digital boarding passes, the feature promises a more efficient, touchless travel experience for users of the iOS 26 ecosystem.

Apple Wallet’s Global Growth

During the conference, Bailey highlighted the rapid expansion of Apple’s financial and utility services. Apple Pay is now active in 89 markets globally, supported by over 11,000 banks and networks. Domestically, merchant adoption has surged, with 90% of U.S. retailers now accepting Apple Pay—a stark contrast to the 3% adoption rate seen at its launch 11 years ago.

Beyond Payments: Keys and Transit

The Wallet app has also diversified its utility beyond commerce:

  • Transit: Supported in over 250 regions and 800 cities worldwide.
  • Hospitality: More than 2 million hotel room keys have been provisioned across 65,000 rooms.
  • Automotive: Car Key technology is currently compatible with 29 manufacturers and over 300 vehicle models.
