Belkin has officially announced the termination of technical support for its legacy Wemo smart home lineup, effective January 31, 2026. This move will render the dedicated Wemo app obsolete and disable cloud-dependent features—such as remote access and voice integration—across a wide array of consumer devices, including smart plugs, light switches, sensors, and kitchen appliances.
The End of an Era for Wemo Users
The company confirmed the decision in an email to its customer base, citing a strategic shift in business focus. Launched in 2011, the Wemo brand was a pioneer in the accessible smart home market, but Belkin now claims it must reallocate resources toward other areas of its business operations.

For users concerned about their investment, Belkin notes that products still under warranty by the sunset date may be eligible for a partial refund. Furthermore, devices configured for Apple HomeKit will retain core functionality even after the Wemo cloud services are deactivated.
A Growing Trend of Planned Obsolescence
Belkin’s decision follows a broader industry pattern where manufacturers pull the plug on functional hardware to streamline support costs. This mirrors Google’s recent strategy regarding its earliest generation Nest Learning Thermostats, which are scheduled to lose connected features in October 2025.
By moving to discontinue older models, companies often encourage users to upgrade to newer hardware through targeted discount offers. While this approach helps manufacturers mitigate the legal risks associated with sudden service termination, it leaves consumers with “dumb” hardware that was previously fully operational.
What Remains Supported?
Not all Wemo products are facing the chopping block. Belkin confirmed that its Thread-based products—specifically SKUs WLS0503, WDC010, WSC010, and WSP100—will remain unaffected and continue to function through the Apple HomeKit ecosystem. Beyond these specific models, however, owners of older Wemo technology should prepare for a complete loss of firmware updates, troubleshooting assistance, and cloud connectivity by the start of 2026.
