Bluesky is aggressively upgrading its platform, rolling out specialized “cashtags” for stock market discussions and a “LIVE” badge feature for Twitch streamers. These updates arrive as the social network experiences a significant spike in user acquisition, fueled by growing public backlash against X.
Capitalizing on the X Controversy
The platform’s recent growth coincides with intensified scrutiny surrounding X. Following reports that the platform’s AI bot, Grok, was generating nonconsensual sexualized imagery of women and minors, California’s attorney general has launched an official investigation into xAI.

Data from market intelligence firm Appfigures highlights a dramatic shift in user behavior. While Bluesky typically averages 4,000 daily U.S. installs, that figure jumped significantly between late December 2025 and mid-January 2026. Specifically, daily iOS downloads climbed from 19,500 to 29,000—a sharp 49% increase—as users sought alternatives to the controversy-plagued X.
New Features: Cashtags and Twitch Integration
To retain this influx of new users, Bluesky is introducing tools aimed at mirroring the utility of established real-time networks:
- Cashtags: Users can now track financial discussions by placing a dollar sign before a ticker symbol (e.g., $AAPL), a convention popularized by Stocktwits and later adopted by Twitter in 2012.
- LIVE Badges: An experimental feature now allows streamers to display a “LIVE” badge on their profile to signal active broadcasts on Twitch.
The Challenge of User Retention
Despite the current momentum, Bluesky faces a steep uphill climb. The platform struggled throughout 2025, with mobile daily active users dropping nearly 40% by October. Pew Research data indicates that while many influencers have established a presence on Bluesky, they continue to prioritize X for their primary engagement.
For Bluesky, the challenge extends beyond feature parity. The company must overcome the high switching costs associated with social media, effectively incentivizing users to break years of ingrained habits and migrate their social activity permanently.
