Bonfire, a nonprofit project built on open-source code, has launched its 1.0 Release Candidate, offering users a decentralized alternative to corporate-controlled platforms like Meta and Google. By prioritizing community governance over capitalistic interests, the software empowers users to build and manage their own digital spaces independently.

The “Flavor” System: Custom Community Governance
The platform differentiates itself through “flavors”—preconfigured bundles of extensions and features that act as templates. Communities can adopt a flavor to govern their app, set their own product roadmaps, and integrate specific extensions. This architecture ensures that users, not algorithms, dictate the direction of their online environment. Beyond the flagship “Bonfire Social,” the project is actively developing specialized flavors for community engagement and open science.
User-Friendly Tools for Custom Feeds
Unlike other platforms where custom feed creation requires technical expertise or third-party tools, Bonfire integrates these capabilities directly into its interface. Users can easily filter content by engagement level, date, type, or source instance. A standout feature is the inclusion of “circles”—a concept familiar to former Google+ users—which allows for the categorization of contacts into specific, private, or shared groups.

Advanced Privacy and Interaction Controls
Bonfire introduces “Boundaries,” a robust feature set that allows users to granularly control who views or engages with specific posts. For instance, a user can broadcast a post to multiple circles while restricting the commenting ability to a single, select group. Additionally, the platform supports nested threaded conversations, prioritizing deep discussion over the attention-economy metrics common in mainstream social apps.

Full Customization and Federated Connectivity
The platform offers extensive personalization, including 16 built-in themes and the ability to define custom layouts, fonts, and colors. Users can manage multiple profiles under a single account—a feature ideal for project teams, collectives, or individuals balancing public and private personas.

Key technical features include:
- Extensions: Admins can enable or disable core features, including likes and reposts.
- Interoperability: Built on ActivityPub, Bonfire federates seamlessly with platforms like Mastodon, PeerTube, and Mobilizon.
- Accessibility: Includes PWA support, full-text search, and custom emoji support.

While the software is currently designed for self-installation, the team is working on a dedicated hosting network to lower the barrier to entry. Interested users can test the platform via a live demo instance.
