British engineering firm IMI, headquartered in Birmingham, has confirmed it is currently managing a significant cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to its internal systems. The company disclosed the breach in a regulatory filing with the London Stock Exchange this past Thursday.
Immediate Response and Investigation
IMI, which specializes in advanced technology for industrial automation, transport, and climate control, has mobilized external cybersecurity experts to investigate the intrusion and contain further damage. The company stated it is actively taking the necessary steps to meet its regulatory obligations following the unauthorized access.
Regulatory Oversight and Data Concerns
While IMI has declined to specify the nature of the attack or confirm if sensitive company data was exfiltrated, the incident has already drawn the attention of regulators. Lucy Milburn, representing the U.K.’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), confirmed that the agency has received a formal data breach report from IMI. The ICO is currently in the process of assessing the details provided by the company.
Growing Threat to U.K. Engineering Sector
This incident follows a similar pattern within the British engineering sector. Only last week, rival firm Smiths Group reported a comparable security breach. Smiths Group disclosed that it was working to recover its affected systems following unauthorized network access. Neither IMI nor Smiths Group has provided a specific timeline regarding when their digital infrastructure will be fully restored.
