Google has officially unveiled an expanded suite of anti-theft security features for Android devices, aimed at neutralizing threats from criminals and protecting user data. Announced this Tuesday, the update builds upon existing safeguards introduced in 2024, such as Theft Detection Lock and Offline Device Lock, by adding more robust authentication and advanced recovery mechanisms.

Targeting High-End Device Security

While premium smartphones—such as Google Pixel Pro models, high-end Samsung devices, and various foldable handsets—are prime targets for theft due to their significant resale value, these new tools are designed to make Android hardware a less attractive prospect for criminals. The latest security updates provide users with granular control over how their devices respond to unauthorized access attempts.

Advanced Authentication Safeguards

For users on Android 16 and higher, Google is providing a dedicated toggle switch for the “Failed Authentication Lock” feature. This allows owners to mandate that a device locks automatically after a specific number of unsuccessful login attempts.

Furthermore, Google is increasing lockout durations following repeated failed attempts to guess a PIN, pattern, or password, making brute-force attacks significantly more difficult. The “Identity Check” feature, previously released for Android 15, has also been expanded. It now secures all apps and services relying on biometrics, including sensitive banking applications and the Google Password Manager.

Enhanced Remote Recovery

The “Remote Lock” tool, which enables users to secure a misplaced or stolen device via a web browser, is receiving a critical security upgrade. Users can now enable an optional security challenge or question, ensuring that only the verified device owner can trigger a remote lock. This functionality is rolling out to devices running Android 10 or later.

Regional Rollout: Default Protection in Brazil

Google is prioritizing high-risk regions by enabling specific features by default. In Brazil, both the Theft Detection Lock—which utilizes on-device AI to identify the motion patterns associated with “snatch-and-run” thefts—and the Remote Lock feature will be activated automatically. Users in the region can manage these settings directly via android.com/lock.
