Google Launches Preferred Sources: Customize Your News Feed – Ankor Tech

Google is officially rolling out its “Preferred Sources” feature, granting users in the U.S. and India greater control over the news content appearing in their search results. Designed to prioritize specific publishers and blogs, the tool allows individuals to curate their own “Top Stories” feed based on their trusted sources.

How to Personalize Your Search Results

The functionality is integrated directly into the search interface. When users perform a search, a “star” icon appears adjacent to the Top Stories section. Tapping this icon allows users to search for and add specific news outlets to their personal preference list.

Once sources are selected, users can refresh their feed to see content prioritized from their chosen publishers. Furthermore, for specific queries, Google will display a dedicated “From your sources” module positioned directly below the standard Top Stories section, ensuring that preferred content remains prominent.

From Experimental Labs to Public Release

This feature originated as an experimental tool within Search Labs, where it required manual opt-in from users. Internal data from the testing phase revealed high engagement, with over 50% of participants selecting four or more preferred sources to populate their feeds.

Following the successful trial, Google is now making the feature accessible to all users conducting English-language searches in the U.S. and India.

The Balance Between Personalization and Echo Chambers

While Preferred Sources offers a streamlined experience for users who want to follow specific outlets, it also introduces potential concerns regarding information silos. By narrowing the scope of news to only include chosen sites, users risk creating an ideological bubble, effectively limiting exposure to diverse perspectives or conflicting viewpoints on trending topics.
