Google has officially launched its 2025 Recap feature, transforming the traditional year-in-review experience by integrating Gemini AI to surface deeper, more meaningful personal highlights. Available throughout December, the feature leverages advanced machine learning to analyze photo archives, identifying specific trends, passions, and top moments that defined the user’s year.

Gemini AI: Beyond Simple Timelines
While previous iterations of the Recap focused on chronological sorting, the 2025 update marks a significant shift toward contextual understanding. Gemini models are now utilized to interpret the nuances within your images. The AI can categorize your “one true passion” and pinpoint the top four highlights that defined your year, offering a curated narrative rather than a random collection of snapshots.
Advanced Customization and Stats
Google has expanded the analytical depth of the Recap to include comprehensive statistics, such as total photo counts and a breakdown of your most frequent subjects. Notably, this year introduces a dedicated “total selfie count.” Users now have greater control over their privacy and personalization, with the ability to hide specific individuals or photos. Once edits are made, the system allows for an instant regeneration of the Recap to ensure the final output aligns with user preferences.

Social Sharing and CapCut Integration
Sharing memories is now more seamless. A new carousel at the end of the Recap provides short-form videos, collages, and photos optimized for social media platforms and group chats. A direct integration with WhatsApp Status is now available for quick sharing. Furthermore, Google has partnered with the editing app CapCut; a new button allows users to export their Recap directly into the platform, unlocking additional templates for deeper creative customization.
How to Access Your 2025 Recap
The Recap feature is rolling out to users globally. If it does not appear automatically, users can trigger the generation process via a prompt at the top of the Google Photos app. Once viewed, the Recap remains accessible throughout December within the Memories carousel or pinned inside the Collections tab.

Beyond the primary Recap, Google confirmed that it will continue to push a series of 2025 highlights throughout the remainder of December, keeping users engaged with their digital archives as the year concludes.
