Google officially debuted a revamped lineup of Nest smart home security devices this Wednesday, introducing new indoor and outdoor cameras alongside a high-definition doorbell. The hardware refresh, which includes the $149.99 Nest Cam Outdoor, $99.99 Nest Cam Indoor, and $179.99 Nest Doorbell, leverages the power of Google’s Gemini AI to transform home monitoring.

Advanced Imaging and Enhanced Field of View
Each new device features 2K HDR video resolution, delivering the sharpest visual fidelity in the Nest ecosystem to date. Google opted for this high-resolution sensor to ensure current and future Gemini models can accurately parse fine details—such as vehicle license plates—without excessive data consumption.
The cameras boast an expanded 152-degree diagonal field of view, while the new doorbell increases its coverage to 166 degrees with a 1:1 aspect ratio. This square format allows for a comprehensive view of doorways, capturing everything from a visitor’s head to packages left on the porch.

Superior Low-Light Performance
Equipped with a new sensor and wider aperture, these devices offer 120% more light sensitivity than previous generations. They maintain full-color video longer during dawn and dusk, while retaining infrared vision for total darkness. Additionally, users can now permanently crop and zoom the doorbell’s live feed to focus on specific areas of interest.
Gemini AI: The Brain of the Smart Home
Google is shifting the focus from simple motion detection to “semantic scene understanding.” Gemini AI processes video feeds to provide context-rich notifications. Instead of a generic “motion detected” alert, users might receive a specific notification like “dog jumps out of playpen.”

The new “Home Brief” feature in the Google Home app summarizes the last 24 hours of activity. Users can query the AI to find specific events, such as confirming if a delivery driver arrived or identifying when children returned from school. Gemini also assists in setting up complex home automations, allowing users to request routines—like “help me feel safer”—which the AI then configures by managing lighting and locks.

Subscription Tiers and Accessibility
Google is doubling the free event history storage from three to six hours, including 10-second video clips for every detected event. The Nest Aware subscription is being rebranded as “Google Home Premium,” with existing pricing ($10/mo for Standard; $20/mo for Advanced) remaining unchanged.
Notably, Google Home Premium is being bundled into Google One AI plans at no extra cost. Furthermore, Google has partnered with Walmart to release budget-friendly “onn” branded devices, offering 1080p resolution with optional AI features available through a subscription.

All functionality from the legacy Nest app has now been migrated into the Google Home app, consolidating the user experience. The devices are available immediately across major global markets, including the U.S., Canada, Australia, Japan, and several European nations.
