Google officially upgraded its Veo 3.1 AI video-generation model this Tuesday, introducing native support for vertical video creation powered by reference images. This update directly targets content creators on platforms like YouTube Shorts, TikTok, and Instagram, allowing for 9:16 aspect ratio outputs without the need for manual cropping.

Seamless Vertical Content Creation

The integration of the 9:16 vertical format streamlines the production workflow for short-form video creators. Beyond the standalone model, Google is embedding these capabilities directly into the YouTube Shorts interface and the YouTube Create app, ensuring a frictionless experience for mobile-first creators.

Enhanced Expressiveness and Visual Consistency

Since the initial release of Veo 3.1 in October 2025, Google has focused on refining how the model interprets reference images. The latest iteration significantly improves character expressions and movement fluidity, even when provided with minimal text prompts. Google reports that the update also bolsters the consistency of characters, objects, and backgrounds, enabling users to blend distinct textures and elements into a unified visual output.

Professional-Grade Features and Scaling

Accessibility remains a priority, with the new features rolling out across multiple Google ecosystems:

  • Casual Users: Available directly within the Gemini app.
  • Professional Creators: Accessible via Google’s video editor, Flow, as well as the Gemini API, Vertex AI, and Google Vids.

Furthermore, Google has enhanced the model’s upscaling capabilities. Users can now generate higher-fidelity content with improved resolution support for 1080p and 4K, currently available through Flow, the Gemini API, and Vertex AI on Google Cloud.
