India’s PC market reached an unprecedented milestone in 2025, shattering previous demand records set during the COVID-19 pandemic. Driven by a massive wave of first-time buyers now seeking device upgrades, shipments of desktops, notebooks, and workstations climbed 10.2% year-over-year to hit 15.9 million units.

A Surge in Market Maturity

According to data from IDC, this performance marks the first time annual shipments have surpassed the 15-million-unit threshold, eclipsing the peaks recorded in 2021 and 2022. India’s contribution to the global PC landscape has expanded significantly, growing from a 3.3% global share in 2020 to 5.6% in 2025. Worldwide shipments also saw growth, rising 8.1% to 284.7 million units, as reported by IDC.

Bharath Shenoy, a research manager at IDC, highlights that the pandemic-era shift toward remote work and learning created a new, permanent user base. “Growing digitization, rising adoption among startups and small businesses, and wider availability in smaller cities have solidified this demand,” Shenoy noted.

Commercial vs. Consumer Dynamics

The market distribution in 2025 was split between commercial buyers, who accounted for 52.9% of shipments, and the consumer segment at 47.1%. The enterprise sector was bolstered by a Windows refresh cycle, while small and medium-sized businesses have begun replacing aging hardware acquired during the pandemic lockdowns.

While industry leaders like HP, Lenovo, Dell, Acer, and Asus continue to dominate, Apple’s Mac lineup maintains a smaller footprint in India compared to the U.S. In 2025, MacBooks represented approximately 5.6% of the Indian notebook market, a stark contrast to the 20% share held in the U.S. market. However, with the introduction of the lower-priced MacBook Neo and Apple’s strategic push into the commercial sector, analysts anticipate potential shifts in market share.

The Role of AI and Future Outlook

Artificial intelligence is beginning to influence purchasing decisions, particularly in the premium laptop segment. While not yet the primary driver of demand, many enterprises are opting for AI-enabled hardware as these models fall into existing budget ranges. Furthermore, as digital media consumption grows, content creators are increasingly eyeing high-performance, AI-ready machines.

Despite the current momentum, the industry faces potential headwinds. Analysts forecast a possible 5% decline in shipments for 2026 due to rising prices and component supply constraints. Nevertheless, India remains a global outlier in growth potential. With PC penetration estimated at only 17% to 20%, the region offers significant long-term runway before the market stabilizes toward 2027.
