Anduril and Meta have officially announced a strategic partnership to develop extended reality (XR) hardware for the U.S. military. The collaboration marks a significant shift in the defense tech landscape, integrating Meta’s advanced research with Anduril’s specialized command software to modernize battlefield intelligence for soldiers.

From Microsoft to Meta: A New Era for IVAS

The partnership stems from the Soldier Borne Mission Command (SBMC) Next program, formerly known as the Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS). The project, which originally held a $22 billion budget, was initially awarded to Microsoft in 2018 to develop high-tech augmented reality glasses. Following persistent development hurdles, the U.S. Army transferred program leadership to Anduril in February, retaining Microsoft solely as a cloud infrastructure provider.

Technology Integration: Lattice and Llama

The new line of devices will leverage cutting-edge technology from Meta’s Reality Labs. According to the official announcement, the hardware will utilize Meta’s Llama AI models integrated with Anduril’s Lattice software. This combination is designed to provide soldiers with real-time, augmented battlefield data through a sophisticated heads-up display.

The EagleEye Vision

Anduril has confirmed that the resulting product ecosystem is titled “EagleEye.” This name holds historical significance for Anduril co-founder Palmer Luckey; it was the original concept for a headset featured in his initial pitch deck before investors successfully pushed him to prioritize software development. Luckey noted that the current collaboration represents a full-circle moment, combining his previous work at Oculus with the innovations developed since founding Anduril in 2017.

A Strategic Reconciliation

This partnership is particularly notable given Luckey’s history with Meta, formerly Facebook. After founding Oculus and selling it to the social media giant for $2 billion, Luckey was famously dismissed from the company in 2017 following public controversy regarding his political activities.

Reflecting on the collaboration, Luckey expressed that the partnership allows him to synthesize his past work at Oculus with the advancements made since his departure. As a gesture of the renewed professional relationship, Anduril has officially launched a Facebook page, signaling a definitive end to the years of public separation between the executive and his former employer.
