Meta is launching a specialized robotics division within its Reality Labs unit to develop AI-powered humanoid robots capable of executing complex physical tasks. This strategic pivot, first reported by Bloomberg, signals the company’s intent to move beyond virtual reality and into the physical automation space, potentially targeting household chore assistance.
Leadership and Strategic Direction
The new group will be spearheaded by Marc Whitten, the former CEO of autonomous vehicle startup Cruise. Whitten brings extensive industry experience to the role, having previously held senior positions at major technology firms including Amazon, Microsoft, and Sonos.
Under Whitten’s leadership, the team is tasked with developing a holistic ecosystem that encompasses both the physical robotics hardware and the underlying AI software required to operate it.
The “Android” Play: Building a Market Foundation
Meta is not currently prioritizing the release of a consumer-facing, Meta-branded robot. Instead, internal leadership—including CTO Andrew Bosworth—is positioning the company to become the foundational layer for the broader robotics industry. The goal is to establish a standard hardware and software architecture, mirroring the role Google’s Android operating system played in the global smartphone revolution.
Industry Partnerships and Future Integration
To accelerate this vision, Meta has initiated high-level discussions with established robotics manufacturers. Reports indicate that potential collaborations are being explored with industry players such as Unitree Robotics and Figure AI, aimed at developing and testing initial robotic prototypes.
