Meta has officially suspended teen access to its AI characters across all platforms globally. The company confirmed it is temporarily disabling these features to refine the technology, aiming to launch an updated version with enhanced safety measures and parental controls.

Strategic Pause Amid Legal Pressure

This decision arrives just days before a high-stakes trial in New Mexico, where Meta faces accusations of failing to protect minors from sexual exploitation on its apps. According to Wired, the company has also attempted to restrict the discovery process concerning the impact of social media on teen mental health.

The suspension applies to any user identified as a teen, including those whose age is flagged by Meta’s predictive technology. While the company intends to reintroduce these characters, the current rollout of parental oversight tools—originally slated for this year—has been superseded by this total shutdown.

Focus on Parental Control and Age-Appropriate Content

Meta indicated that the upcoming iteration of AI characters will prioritize age-appropriate interactions. Future features will strictly focus on educational topics, sports, and hobbies, while integrating robust parental controls that allow guardians to monitor or completely disable chatbot access.

This shift follows a broader trend of tightening restrictions on teen access to AI. Earlier this year, Meta implemented Instagram controls modeled after PG-13 ratings to limit exposure to extreme violence, nudity, and graphic drug use.

Regulatory Scrutiny and Industry Trends

The tech giant faces intense regulatory heat, including an upcoming trial regarding social media addiction, where CEO Mark Zuckerberg is expected to testify. This environment of heightened accountability has forced several major players to pivot their AI strategies:

  • Character.AI: Restricted open-ended chatbot conversations for users under 18 and shifted toward interactive storytelling.
  • OpenAI: Implemented stricter safety protocols for ChatGPT, including age-prediction technology to enforce content boundaries.

Meta has confirmed that when the updated AI experience eventually launches, it will be available to all users with new, built-in safety features designed to address the specific concerns of parents and regulators alike.
