Microsoft is set to host its annual Build developer conference from May 19 to 22, 2025. The event serves as the primary stage for the company to unveil major advancements in AI integration, cloud services, and Windows operating system enhancements.
The Evolution of Copilot
Copilot is expected to dominate the event, with significant updates potentially reshaping its role across Microsoft’s ecosystem. Reports indicate that Microsoft is actively testing alternative AI models from xAI, Meta, Anthropic, and DeepSeek, signaling a strategic shift as its partnership with OpenAI faces increasing scrutiny.
Furthermore, Windows users may soon see “agentic” capabilities integrated into the platform. Recent data suggests the addition of an Action button within the Windows Copilot client, designed to autonomously execute everyday PC tasks, marking a transition from a simple chatbot to a proactive digital assistant.
In-House Innovation and MAI Models
Beyond third-party integrations, Microsoft has reportedly developed its own family of AI models, dubbed MAI. These models are positioned to compete directly with OpenAI’s technology. Build 2025 may serve as the official venue for Microsoft to unveil these models and offer them to developers via API, reducing reliance on external providers.
Hardware and Cloud Infrastructure
Hardware enthusiasts should keep an eye on developments regarding the Azure Maia AI accelerator. Following the debut of the Maia 100, rumors suggest the announcement of a “Maia 2” chip. Semiconductor analysts indicate that chipmaker Marvell is currently contracted to manufacture this next-generation hardware, which is designed to bolster the processing power of Microsoft’s Azure cloud services.
Justifying Software Price Hikes
The timing of these announcements is critical. Last November, Microsoft raised prices for products like Windows 365, Office 365, and Microsoft 365 by 5%. To maintain enterprise and consumer loyalty, the company is under pressure to justify these costs by debuting high-value AI features and robust new capabilities during the conference keynotes, which will be streamed live for free.
