The Mozilla Foundation, the nonprofit entity behind the Firefox browser, has officially laid off 30% of its workforce. The move comes as the organization attempts to navigate a period of intense technological shifts, resulting in the elimination of its dedicated advocacy and global programs divisions.

Strategic Reorganization Amid Industry Change

In an internal email sent to staff on October 30, Executive Director Nabiha Syed stated that the foundation is restructuring to improve agility and focus. The decision marks a significant shift in operations, as the organization seeks to accelerate its commitment to a more open and equitable technical landscape.

“The Mozilla Foundation is reorganizing teams to increase agility and impact,” a spokesperson confirmed. “That unfortunately means ending some of the work we have historically pursued and eliminating associated roles to bring more focus going forward.”

Impact on Workforce and Divisions

While the foundation reported 60 employees in its 2022 tax filings, sources indicate the staff count had climbed to approximately 120 people prior to these cuts. The layoffs specifically target the foundation’s advocacy and global programs departments, which are being dissolved as formal, standalone divisions.

Despite the closure of these specific departments, communications chief Brandon Borrman later clarified that advocacy remains a “central tenet” of the organization’s mission and will be integrated across all remaining functional areas.

A Challenging Year for Mozilla

This reduction represents the second round of layoffs at Mozilla this year. The previous round impacted dozens of employees within the Mozilla Corporation, the branch responsible for the development of the Firefox browser and other commercial technologies. The two organizations operate under different mandates: the Corporation handles product development, while the Foundation manages corporate governance and policy.

The Path Forward

Nabiha Syed, who took the helm as executive director in February after leading the investigative site The Markup, emphasized that the decision was driven by the need for “laser focus” in an unpredictable market. According to Syed, the foundation aims to build a more unified narrative and modernize its strategic communications.

“Our mission at Mozilla is more high-stakes than ever,” Syed noted in her communication to the team. “Navigating this topsy-turvy, distracting time requires laser focus—and sometimes saying goodbye to the excellent work that has gotten us this far because it won’t get us to the next peak.”
