Peloton is aggressively expanding its business model to capture a broader audience, with CEO Peter Stern announcing plans to integrate its equipment into commercial gyms and launch a dedicated marketplace for pre-owned devices. The strategy, revealed at the Bloomberg Tech Summit this Thursday, aims to stabilize the company’s market position by diversifying revenue streams and formalizing the secondhand ecosystem.
Expanding Into Commercial Gyms via Precor
The fitness giant intends to leverage its subsidiary, Precor, to distribute Peloton hardware into professional gym environments. This move marks a significant shift for a brand traditionally focused on the at-home fitness experience. Beyond physical equipment placement, the company is developing software updates to make Peloton’s signature workout content compatible with existing Precor machines, creating a seamless hybrid experience for gym-goers.
Launching “Repowered” for Secondhand Sales
Recognizing the massive volume of Peloton equipment traded on informal channels, the company has officially launched Repowered, a peer-to-peer marketplace for used gear. This platform is designed to replace the friction and security concerns associated with third-party sites like Facebook Marketplace.
“We want to streamline the process and deliver a more premium experience for secondhand customers,” Stern stated. By providing a branded channel for these transactions, Peloton aims to eliminate the need for users to coordinate with strangers or facilitate equipment hand-offs in private homes.
AI-Driven Personalization for Members
Beyond hardware expansion, Peloton is doubling down on its digital ecosystem by integrating artificial intelligence. The objective is to move away from one-size-fits-all workout libraries toward highly individualized programming.
Stern emphasized that the company is developing AI tools to scale coaching, ensuring that each member receives tailored recommendations. By matching users with the specific instructors and class intensities that align with their personal fitness goals, Peloton seeks to increase long-term member engagement and retention.
