Reddit CEO Steve Huffman confirmed during the company’s Q3 2025 earnings call that AI chatbots are not currently a significant source of traffic for the platform. Despite the rapid integration of AI-driven search tools by industry giants like OpenAI and Google, Huffman emphasized that direct access and traditional Google Search remain the primary engines of Reddit’s user growth.
The Reality of AI Traffic Impact
Addressing analysts’ concerns regarding shifting search behaviors, Huffman clarified that while relationships with AI developers are evolving, the tangible impact on user acquisition is minimal. “They are not a traffic driver today,” Huffman stated. He highlighted that recent years have fostered a better understanding of the value inherent in Reddit’s data, leading to healthier partnerships with tech firms, even if those collaborations do not yet translate into a direct surge of incoming site visitors.
When pressed on the breakdown of user acquisition, Huffman acknowledged that the split between Google Search and direct traffic is “approximate, but pretty close” to a 50/50 ratio.
Data Licensing vs. Legal Battles
Reddit’s strategy regarding Large Language Models (LLMs) remains a complex balance of commercial licensing and litigation. Following a major policy shift in May 2024 that restricted unauthorized data access, the platform has pursued a dual-track approach:
- Strategic Partnerships: Reddit has secured high-profile content licensing agreements, most notably a partnership agreement with Google and a data training deal with OpenAI.
- Aggressive Enforcement: The company has actively engaged in legal disputes against firms like Anthropic and Perplexity, accusing them of scraping data without authorization.
Robust Financial and User Growth
The platform’s Q3 performance underscores its resilience, reporting $585 million in revenue—a 68% year-on-year increase. Key user metrics demonstrate strong momentum:
- Daily Active Users (DAU): 116 million.
- Weekly Active Users (WAU): 444 million, reflecting 20% year-over-year growth.
- International Expansion: 31% year-on-year growth in daily international users.
- Domestic Reach: Over 190 million Americans visit the platform weekly.
Investing in Internal Search and Onboarding
Rather than relying on external chatbots, Reddit is doubling down on its proprietary search capabilities. Huffman revealed that 75 million people used the platform’s internal search weekly during Q3. Currently, 20% of search volumes are processed through AI-powered “Answers” and the core search interface, with plans to unify these features further in the coming quarters.
To capitalize on this growth, the company is also refining its onboarding experience. By simplifying how new users navigate the site, Reddit aims to accelerate engagement. “Our goal is to connect users with relevant content very quickly,” Huffman said, ensuring that the platform’s value is immediately apparent from the very first session.
