Reddit has officially launched a new privacy suite, allowing users to curate their profiles by hiding specific post and comment history. The announcement, made this Tuesday, marks a significant shift in how the platform manages user transparency and personal data visibility.

How to Manage Your Reddit Profile Visibility
The update introduces a “Content and Activity” setting under a new “Curate your profile” section. While Reddit continues to keep all posts and comments visible by default, users now possess the granular control to toggle off the visibility of their activity. This includes the ability to:
- Hide all public posts and comments from their profile.
- Selectively display content from specific communities while keeping others hidden.
- Toggle NSFW content visibility on or off.
- Show or hide their total follower count.

Privacy vs. Platform Engagement
This move is a strategic pivot for Reddit. Historically, users relied on “throwaway” accounts to discuss sensitive topics like health or relationships to avoid long-term digital footprints. As Reddit transitions into an ad-focused tech company, the platform aims to keep users engaged under a single identity, making ad targeting more effective while still offering enough privacy to encourage participation.
Important Limitations and Moderator Access
While these tools offer a cleaner profile, they do not guarantee total anonymity. It is crucial to note the following caveats:
- Community Visibility: Your username remains visible alongside your posts and comments within the specific subreddits where they were posted.
- Moderator Oversight: Moderators retain access to a user’s full post and comment history for 28 days, regardless of the visibility settings. This is intended to assist in moderation tasks, such as reviewing join requests or managing restricted communities.
- Contextual Exposure: If another user interacts directly with a post on your profile, you may see your full history temporarily exposed to them.

Refreshed Activity Summaries
In addition to these privacy controls, Reddit has updated its personal activity summaries. These dashboards now provide a clearer overview of a user’s contributions, including account age, total Karma, and active communities—with the latter now dynamically reflecting the user’s chosen “Content and Activity” privacy settings.
