Reddit Tests AI Shopping Search: Community Wisdom Meets Ads – Ankor Tech

Reddit officially launched a new AI-powered search tool this Thursday, designed to bridge the gap between organic community recommendations and e-commerce. By integrating product data from advertising partners directly into search results, the platform aims to monetize its vast repository of user discussions while simplifying the shopping experience for its U.S. audience.

Transforming Search into a Shopping Hub

A select group of users in the United States will now encounter interactive product carousels when performing searches on the platform. These carousels appear for intent-driven queries—such as “best noise-canceling headphones” or “electronic gift ideas for students”—and include high-resolution product images, current pricing, and direct links to retailers.

This initiative represents a significant evolution in Reddit’s shopping product strategy. The system pulls recommendations directly from community conversations, ensuring that the products displayed are backed by user discussions and peer-to-peer advice. If a user interacts with a product in the carousel, they are provided with deeper details before being redirected to the merchant to finalize the purchase.

Strategic Integration of Commerce

The move follows the launch of Reddit’s Dynamic Product Ads (DPA) last year, which began the process of serving personalized recommendations based on user interests. By embedding these features into search, Reddit is positioning itself to compete with platforms like TikTok and Instagram, which have successfully monetized social discovery.

“This feature surfaces top-recommended products directly from discussions, giving redditors instant information,” the company stated in an official blog post. Reddit emphasized that the goal is to improve platform navigation while keeping community perspectives at the core of the user experience.

The AI Revenue Engine

The push toward AI-driven commerce is a core component of Reddit’s recent financial strategy. During the company’s latest earnings release, CEO Steve Huffman identified the platform’s AI search engine as a primary growth driver for future revenue.

The data underscores the scale of this opportunity:

  • Weekly active users for search grew by 30% over the last year, climbing from 60 million to 80 million.
  • Engagement with “Reddit Answers,” the platform’s AI-powered feature, surged from 1 million weekly active users in Q1 2025 to 15 million by Q4.

As Reddit continues to refine this tool, it faces a crowded market. Other tech giants are aggressively pursuing similar integrations, most notably OpenAI, which introduced an “Instant Checkout” feature for ChatGPT last September, allowing users to make purchases from Etsy and Shopify directly within a chat interface.
