Shade, a tech startup focused on optimizing creative workflows, has successfully raised $14 million in funding to scale its AI-powered platform. The tool allows creative teams to search vast video libraries using plain English, effectively solving the “messy” reality of managing high-volume digital assets.

Advanced AI Search and Instant Streaming

The platform distinguishes itself through an intelligent indexing system. It automatically transcribes videos, enabling users to perform complex searches based on semantic meaning, specific transcript keywords, and even facial recognition for labeled individuals. This eliminates the manual tagging process that traditionally plagues video editing teams.

Beyond search, Shade introduces a “streamable” file system. Unlike traditional cloud storage solutions like Google Drive or Dropbox—which require users to download massive files entirely before they can be opened—Shade mounts cloud storage directly to a local filesystem. This allows creators to begin editing immediately. For teams operating in low-bandwidth environments, the platform also offers a feature to “pin” files for offline or high-speed access.

Collaboration and Client Delivery

Shade is designed to centralize the post-production lifecycle. The platform facilitates team collaboration by allowing users to leave feedback directly on video frames at specific timestamps. Stakeholders can attach supplementary files to comments, ensuring clear communication. Furthermore, the system supports granular access control, enabling teams to create multiple links for assets with custom permissions and role-based access.

For final client handoffs, Shade provides a professional solution: branded, password-protected file collections with customizable expiry dates, ensuring security and professionalism in every delivery.

Market Position and Future Roadmap

While startups like Poly and Memories.ai are also competing in the AI-powered storage space, investors see Shade’s architectural approach as a significant differentiator. Keith Rabois, managing director at Khosla Ventures, noted that while most competitors simply “layer” search on top of existing storage, Shade rebuilt the entire stack from the ground up.

“Shade rebuilt the stack from first principles, spanning streaming, indexing, and collaboration in one system,” Rabois stated. “That architectural approach is harder, but it is why the product actually works, not just as a bolt-on feature.”

Looking ahead, the company plans to broaden its search capabilities to include images and documents. Additionally, the team is developing a no-code platform designed to help creative teams automate complex workflows based on their stored files. With a current pricing model of $20 per seat, per month—offering unlimited AI indexing and 500GB of active storage—Shade is positioning itself as an essential utility for modern creative businesses.
