SimpliSafe has officially expanded its home security portfolio with the launch of “Active Guard Outdoor Protection.” This new 24/7 monitoring service, priced at $50 per month, leverages a combination of artificial intelligence and professional human agents to provide real-time threat intervention for residential properties.

Advanced AI Meets Human Oversight

The service is exclusively compatible with the new Outdoor Security Camera Series 2. According to the company, this hardware requirement is driven by the camera’s ability to run “AI for the Familiar Face” software, a feature absent in the previous generation. This technology distinguishes between residents and potential intruders, significantly reducing false alarms.

When the system detects an unrecognized individual, it triggers an immediate alert to a human agent at the monitoring center. These agents retain the final authority on how to respond, with the ability to:

  • Communicate directly with the individual via the camera’s two-way audio.
  • Activate the siren and integrated floodlights.
  • Dispatch local authorities if the situation escalates.

A Cautious Approach to Automation

Hooman Shahidi, SVP of Product at SimpliSafe, emphasizes that the AI is designed strictly to assist human agents rather than replace them. “We’ve trained our agents on racial bias and have a diverse workforce,” Shahidi noted, underscoring the company’s intent to keep critical security decisions in human hands.

CEO Christian Cerda added that while the firm is exploring generative AI, they are maintaining a deliberate and cautious deployment strategy to ensure safety and accuracy remain the top priorities.

Market Positioning

Founded in 2006, the Boston-based company currently ranks among the top three home security providers in the United States, competing directly with industry giants like ADT and Vivint. As the smart home market becomes increasingly crowded with rivals like Amazon’s Ring and Google’s Nest, SimpliSafe continues to differentiate itself through its blend of proprietary hardware and subscription-based professional monitoring.

With its headquarters recently expanded in Boston, the company continues to leverage a workforce that includes several veterans from the robotics industry, including CEO Christian Cerda, formerly the COO of iRobot.
