Snapchat officially introduced “Home Safe” this Thursday, a new safety-focused feature designed to automatically notify friends and family when a user arrives home. The tool aims to provide peace of mind after nights out, concerts, or travel by streamlining how users share their safe arrival status.
How to Enable and Use Home Safe
To activate the feature, users must first designate a home location. This is done by tapping your Bitmoji on the Snap Map and selecting “My Home.” Once configured, the process for sending an alert is straightforward:
- Open a direct conversation with the friend you wish to notify.
- Tap the Map icon within the chat interface.
- Select the “Home Safe” button.
Once you reach your saved location, the application will automatically trigger an alert directly within that chat thread, confirming your arrival without requiring further manual input.
Privacy and Security Controls
Snapchat emphasizes that user privacy remains a priority. Alerts are restricted exclusively to friends with whom you are already sharing your live location. Because location sharing on Snap Map is disabled by default, no data is broadcast or alerts sent unless the user explicitly opts into the feature.
“Whether you’re heading back from a first date, a crowded concert, or a weekend getaway, Home Safe can offer a close friend or family member peace of mind that you’ve made it home safely,” the company stated in an official blog post.
Snap Map’s Continued Evolution
The rollout of Home Safe follows a period of significant growth for the platform. Two months ago, Snapchat reported that Snap Map surpassed 400 million monthly active users. Originally launched in 2017 as a simple tool to view friends’ locations and browse public snaps, the feature has expanded into a comprehensive discovery engine for local hotspots and events.
