Snapchat officially announced on Wednesday the debut of its inaugural awards show, “The Snappys,” scheduled to take place on March 21. Hosted at the company’s Santa Monica headquarters, the event aims to honor the creators who are actively shaping culture through the platform.
Celebrating Snapchat’s Top Creators
The awards recognize excellence across a diverse range of categories, including fashion, beauty, sports, music, food, and gaming. Top honors include prestigious titles such as “Spotlight MVP,” “Best Storyteller,” and “Breakout Creator of the Year.” Other categories focus on comedy, collaboration, and overall cultural impact.
In an official blog post, the company emphasized that these accolades are designed to acknowledge creators not merely as platform users, but as legitimate artists, entertainers, and leaders who build communities and drive digital discourse.
A Competitive Shift in Social Media
Snapchat is the latest major platform to formalize creator recognition. Meta’s Instagram introduced its “Ring” award last October, gifting winners a physical ring designed by Grace Wales Bonner alongside a digital badge. Similarly, TikTok held its first U.S. awards show in November, featuring categories like “Creator of the Year” and “Video of the Year,” mirroring successful international events previously held in markets like Germany, Mexico, and Korea.
The Snappys will follow the traditional awards show format, featuring a live reveal of winners in the presence of industry leaders and special guests. Notably, DJ Khaled is set to receive the “Lifetime Achievement Award” at the ceremony.
Event Details and Future Announcements
Comedian and creator Matt Friend has been tapped to host the event. While the date is set for March 21, Snapchat intends to release further details, including the full list of nominees, in the coming weeks.
By establishing these awards, Snapchat and its competitors are clearly signaling a strategic pivot, positioning their platforms as central pillars of the modern entertainment industry rather than simple social networking apps.
