Spotify is officially rolling out group chat functionality, allowing users to share podcasts, playlists, and audiobooks with up to 10 people simultaneously. This update, announced by the streaming giant this week, builds upon the messaging feature first introduced in August to foster deeper community interaction within the app.
How Group Chats Work
The new communication tool is designed to connect existing circles of listeners. Users can initiate a group chat only with individuals they have previously interacted with on the platform. This includes collaborators on shared playlists, participants in a “Jam” session, or connections made through “Blend” features.
Spotify’s Social Strategy
This rollout signals a continued shift for Spotify, which is aggressively transforming from a standalone streaming service into a more interactive social ecosystem. Over recent years, the platform has integrated various social-first tools, including podcast commenting and the ability to track the listening habits of friends and followers.
Security and Usage Guidelines
While Spotify is expanding its social footprint, it maintains that these native messaging tools are intended to complement, rather than replace, external communication platforms. Users are encouraged to continue utilizing third-party apps for broader social sharing.
Regarding data security, Spotify has confirmed that all messages are encrypted both at rest and in transit. However, it is important to note that the feature does not currently support end-to-end encryption.
