Portuguese drone manufacturer Tekever has successfully secured €70 million ($74 million) in a Series B funding round. The capital injection is earmarked for product development and an aggressive expansion into new markets, with a strategic focus on the United States. This move highlights a broader industry shift, as agile tech-driven startups increasingly challenge the dominance of traditional “defense primes.”

Strategic Backing from NATO and Baillie Gifford

The funding round was spearheaded by the NATO Innovation Fund—a €1 billion defense-focused venture fund—and Baillie Gifford & Co., a firm renowned for its early investment in SpaceX. Additional participation came from the U.K.’s National Security Strategic Investment Fund, Silicon Valley-based Crescent Cove Advisors, and existing investors Iberis Semper and Cedrus Capital.

Patrick Schneider-Sikorsky, a partner at the NATO Innovation Fund, emphasized the rapid evolution of the European drone sector since 2022. “We have a deep interest in technologies that deliver impact in both civilian and defense markets,” he noted, citing Tekever’s extensive applications in Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) as a primary driver for the investment.

Vertical Integration as a Competitive Edge

Unlike conventional aerospace firms, Tekever maintains full operational control over its technology stack. From airframe design and manufacturing to avionics, software, and AI-driven data processing, the company’s vertically integrated model allows for rapid iteration. This agility is critical in the modern theater of warfare, where customer needs and battlefield conditions fluctuate constantly.

The company’s flagship drone, the ARX, is designed to command a fleet of smaller uncrewed aerial vehicles. This system is currently deployed in diverse environments, ranging from monitoring migrant smuggling operations in the English Channel for the U.K. Home Office to active reconnaissance missions in the war in Ukraine.

Addressing Europe’s Technological Gap

The urgency for high-performance drone technology has been accelerated by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Tekever CEO Ricardo Mendes has been vocal about the need for Europe to bolster its defense capabilities. “We have the war in Ukraine on our borders and Europe is lagging behind in terms of technological growth,” Mendes stated in an interview with Bloomberg.

While the company has opted not to disclose its current valuation, this Series B round marks a significant milestone for the firm, which bootstrapped its early operations before raising a €20 million Series A in 2022. By combining a software-centric approach with hardware manufacturing, Tekever is positioning itself as a vital player in the future of global defense and security infrastructure.
