A federal jury has convicted 55-year-old Texas software developer Davis Lu of intentionally damaging his former employer’s computer network. Following a 2018 corporate restructuring that curtailed his access and responsibilities, Lu orchestrated a sophisticated digital sabotage that resulted in widespread global system failures.
The ‘Kill Switch’ Mechanism
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Lu engineered a malicious “kill switch” designed to trigger if his network credentials were ever revoked. He labeled this specific piece of code “IsDLEnabledinAD,” a direct reference to his account status within the company’s Active Directory.
Global Network Disruption
The sabotage materialized on September 9, 2019, the day Lu departed from the organization. As soon as his credentials were deactivated, the code executed, locking thousands of employees worldwide out of critical systems. Reports confirm that the resulting breach caused the company hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages and operational losses.
Legal Consequences and Sentencing
Lu now faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison for his actions. The court has officially scheduled his sentencing hearing for June 23, where a judge will determine the final penalty for the intentional destruction of corporate infrastructure.
