Every Christmas Eve, parents face the inevitable question from eager children: “Where is Santa right now?” Thanks to advanced tracking platforms like the NORAD Santa Tracker and Google’s Santa Tracker, families can follow Father Christmas in real-time. This year, the integration of artificial intelligence adds a new layer of holiday magic to the tracking experience.
Tracking Santa with NORAD
The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) launched its original Santa tracking mission in 1955. What began as a simple monitoring service has evolved into an immersive digital experience featuring mini-games, festive music, and interactive stories.

A significant upgrade this year is the collaboration with OpenAI to introduce AI-powered features. Users can now utilize an image generator to transform selfies into animated elves, generate custom toy ideas to create printable coloring pages, and use a fill-in-the-blank storytelling engine to craft personalized holiday tales.
The technical backbone of the tracker relies on Cesium’s 3D mapping library, which, combined with Bing Maps satellite imagery, provides a realistic 3D visualization of the sleigh’s journey. Additionally, the “Santa Cam” offers video updates of his global delivery route.
Access is available at noradsanta.org or via official apps on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. For a traditional touch, the organization maintains a call center where volunteers provide live updates at 1-877-HI-NORAD (1-877-446-6732).
The Google Santa Tracker Experience
Since 2004, Google has provided a comprehensive simulation of Santa’s journey. Their dashboard displays a live map, next-stop predictions, and real-time statistics including distance traveled and total presents delivered.

Throughout December, the platform functions as “Santa’s Village,” an interactive hub where users can engage in educational activities. Highlights include the “Elf Maker,” “Elf Jamband,” and coding tutorials like “Code Boogie,” designed to teach children programming fundamentals through play.
Google Assistant also provides voice-activated tracking. By asking, “Hey, Google, where’s Santa?” or “What’s new at the North Pole?”, users can access the North Pole Newscast or initiate a simulated call to Santa himself, further enhancing the interactive nature of the holiday countdown.
