United Natural Foods (UNFI), the massive distribution giant serving over 30,000 retailers across North America, reports “significant progress” in recovering from a major cyberattack. Despite these restoration efforts, grocery stores throughout the U.S. and Canada continue to grapple with persistent inventory shortages nearly two weeks after the initial breach.

Restoring Digital Infrastructure

In a formal update released Sunday, UNFI confirmed it is actively bringing its electronic ordering systems back online. These platforms are critical for supermarkets to manage inventory and request fresh produce and essential goods.

The company, which first disclosed the June 5 incident days after it occurred, was forced to shut down its entire network to contain the threat. This drastic measure effectively halted the distributor’s ability to fulfill and ship orders at scale, leading to a widespread supply chain bottleneck.

Impact on Major Retailers and Commissaries

The fallout is hitting major chains hard, most notably Whole Foods, which relies on UNFI as its primary distributor. Reports from New York to California indicate noticeable gaps on store shelves, with employees confirming that specific products have been unavailable for several days.

The disruption has extended beyond commercial retail into government-run facilities. Kevin Robinson, a spokesperson for the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA), confirmed that the cyberattack has hindered deliveries to 53 commissaries serving active-duty military personnel and veterans.

Manual Workarounds and Ongoing Recovery

While UNFI has yet to provide a definitive timeline for a full return to normal operations, some retailers have turned to alternative distributors to mitigate the damage. DeCA officials noted that they have implemented manual workarounds to minimize the impact on their shelves, though the situation remains fluid.

As the distribution network struggles to stabilize, store operators across the continent continue to report varying degrees of logistical challenges. UNFI maintains that it is prioritizing the restoration of its systems to clear the backlog of orders and resume standard operations.
