X Launches Official Marketplace for Inactive Usernames – Ankor Tech
Spread the love

X is officially launching a dedicated marketplace for inactive usernames, enabling Premium subscribers to request and purchase desirable handles. This move marks a strategic shift for the platform, offering both free and paid acquisition paths for handles that were previously unavailable.

Priority Handles: The Premium Advantage

The platform distinguishes between “Priority” and “Rare” handles. Priority handles—typically consisting of full names, multi-word phrases, or alphanumeric combinations like @GabrielJones or @ParadoxAI—are available to Premium+ and Premium Business subscribers at no extra cost upon approval.

If a request is granted, X transfers the handle to the user. However, the platform enforces a strict retention policy: should a user cancel or downgrade their subscription, the original handle is restored to the account following a 30-day grace period.

The Market for Rare Usernames

For highly coveted, short, or culturally significant names like @Pizza or @Tom, X is implementing a more exclusive approach. These “Rare” handles are excluded from standard requests and will instead be distributed through:

  • Public Drops: Competitive applications where selection depends on the user’s platform contributions, engagement, reach, and intended use.
  • Direct Purchases: Pre-priced acquisitions available by invitation only.

Pricing for these rare assets is dynamic, determined by character length, word popularity, and cultural relevance. Unlike Priority handles, rare usernames acquired via direct purchase remain with the user permanently, regardless of their subscription status. Prices for these assets are expected to range from $2,500 to figures exceeding $1 million.

Security and Platform Strategy

X maintains a rigorous review process, with most requests evaluated within three business days. To prevent bot-driven spam and account squatting, the platform has opted for this controlled marketplace model rather than a mass release of inactive handles. This structure, detailed on the official help page, aims to ensure fair and secure distribution.

For users targeting specific inactive handles not currently listed, X provides a “Watchlist” feature. Users can register their interest, and the platform will provide a notification if the desired handle becomes available for acquisition. This initiative serves as a new revenue stream for the social network, helping to offset the challenges currently facing its advertising business while incentivizing further adoption of its Premium subscription tiers.
