X officially launched its stand-alone messaging application, XChat, on Friday. The app is currently available for iOS devices, offering a dedicated space for users to manage X contacts, share files, participate in group chats, and conduct audio or video calls.

A Strategic Pivot from the “Everything App”

The release follows a successful beta testing phase conducted earlier this year. While the company previously championed the vision of a single “everything app” to house messaging, payments, and AI services, the launch of XChat signals a strategic departure. Instead of consolidating all features into one interface, X—under the broader xAI umbrella—is now distributing its services across a suite of specialized, stand-alone applications.

Privacy Features and Security Concerns

XChat enters the competitive messaging market with a focus on privacy-centric tools. The app includes the ability to edit or delete messages for all participants, support for disappearing messages, and a block-screenshot feature. Furthermore, the company asserts that XChat operates without ads or tracking mechanisms.

Regarding security, X claims that all communications are end-to-end encrypted and PIN-protected. However, these assertions remain under scrutiny. Security experts have previously disputed the platform’s encryption claims, often comparing it unfavorably to established, highly secure alternatives like Signal. Independent security audits are expected as the app sees broader adoption.

Replacing X Communities

Beyond direct messaging, XChat is set to become the new home for X Communities. With the company shutting down the native Communities feature on the main platform due to low engagement and high spam levels, the migration of community members to XChat could provide a significant early boost in user installs.

Future Roadmap

This launch is only the first phase of the company’s messaging roadmap. Benji Taylor, lead designer at X, confirmed on social media that the current version of the app is “just the beginning” of the development cycle for their messaging ecosystem.
