At its Zoomtopia conference on Wednesday, Zoom unveiled a massive suite of AI-driven updates designed to reclaim its dominance in the productivity market. The company is launching a versatile AI Companion that functions across third-party meeting apps, alongside photorealistic AI avatars, advanced meeting scheduling tools, and native support for personal note-taking.

Expanding AI Beyond the Zoom Ecosystem

In a direct challenge to competitors like Read AI, Otter, and Fireflies, Zoom is evolving its AI bot. The new AI Companion will no longer be siloed; it will now integrate with external platforms, including Google Meet and Microsoft Teams. Additionally, the tool will support note-taking during in-person meetings, bridging the gap between digital and physical collaboration.

Zoom is also introducing a feature allowing users to jot down quick notes during calls, which the AI will then automatically expand and structure. Furthermore, a new cross-platform search functionality will enable users to retrieve critical information directly from Google and Microsoft ecosystems.

Intelligent Scheduling and Meeting Prep

The update introduces proactive calendar management. The AI Companion can now identify optimal meeting times for all participants and includes a “free up my time” feature to suggest which meetings users can safely skip—a functionality mirroring tools like Clockwise. Beyond scheduling, the platform will offer proactive recommendations, such as suggested agenda items and tasks to streamline meeting preparation.

Photorealistic Avatars and Digital Twins

Zoom is finally rolling out its highly anticipated photorealistic AI avatars, which mimic user movements and expressions. Designed for situations where a user is not “camera-ready,” these avatars represent a significant leap in digital presence. However, the company acknowledges the risks of deepfake misuse, which may prompt corporate IT departments to establish strict usage controls.

Advanced Features and Live Translation

The platform is also integrating new live translation capabilities to break down language barriers during global calls. By the end of the year, users will be able to utilize AI avatars and Zoom Clips—the company’s asynchronous video tool—to greet participants in waiting rooms or provide meeting briefings automatically.

Infrastructure and Customization Upgrades

Zoom is further modernizing its infrastructure to support high-performance workflows:

  • Custom AI Agents: Support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to build specialized AI assistants.
  • Performance Boost: Enhanced support for higher bit rates and 60 fps video quality.
  • Asset Management: A new centralized tool for managing video assets.
  • Enhanced Workspace: A redesigned web interface that elevates the AI Companion, alongside a writing assistant for drafting emails and documents, plus a deep research feature.

These updates, long in the making, signal Zoom’s transition from a simple video conferencing app to a comprehensive, AI-powered productivity suite.
