YouTube Brings Conversational AI to Smart TVs – Ankor Tech
Spread the love

YouTube is officially expanding its conversational AI tool to smart TVs, gaming consoles, and streaming devices, marking a major shift in how viewers interact with content on the living room’s largest screen. Previously restricted to mobile and web platforms, the experimental feature allows users to query video content in real-time without interrupting their viewing experience.

How the AI Assistant Works on Your TV

According to YouTube’s official support documentation, eligible users can now trigger the assistant by selecting the “Ask” button directly on their TV interface. The tool provides context-aware suggested questions or allows users to input custom queries using their remote’s microphone.

Whether you need to clarify recipe ingredients in a cooking video or want background information on a song’s lyrics, the AI provides instant, on-screen answers. Currently, this experimental rollout is limited to users over 18 and supports English, Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese, and Korean.

The Shift Toward Television Dominance

This expansion comes as television has become the primary portal for YouTube consumption. Data from an April 2025 Nielsen report highlights that YouTube commands 12.4% of total television audience time, successfully outpacing major streaming giants like Netflix and Disney.

Competitive Landscape in AI-Powered Streaming

YouTube is not alone in the race to integrate AI into the home entertainment experience:

  • Amazon: Alexa+ on Fire TV now facilitates natural conversations for content recommendations, scene hunting, and detailed inquiries about actors or filming locations.
  • Roku: The platform has significantly upgraded its voice assistant to handle open-ended questions, such as analyzing the tone of a movie or providing plot summaries.
  • Netflix: The streaming leader is actively testing its own proprietary AI-driven search experience.

A Broader AI Strategy

The move into TV-based conversational AI is part of YouTube’s aggressive push into artificial intelligence. Recent initiatives include an AI-powered tool that automatically upscales low-resolution videos to full HD, a comment summarization feature, and an AI-driven search carousel. Furthermore, YouTube continues to diversify its ecosystem, having recently launched a dedicated app for Apple Vision Pro to provide theater-sized, immersive viewing environments.
