OpenAI has officially announced a strategic partnership with Reliance to integrate AI-powered search and discovery features into the JioHotstar streaming platform. Revealed at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, the collaboration aims to transform how over 100 million weekly ChatGPT users in India navigate entertainment and live sports content.
Transforming Content Discovery with AI
The integration goes beyond basic search. By embedding ChatGPT directly into the JioHotstar ecosystem, the platform will offer contextual recommendations and deep links, effectively turning the AI into a two-way discovery layer. Users can now interact with the platform using natural language to find content, moving from simple curiosity to specific, relevant context.
“This partnership is designed to bring personalized AI experiences into entertainment and live sports,” said Fidji Simo, Chief Executive of Applications at OpenAI. According to Uday Shankar, Vice Chairperson of JioStar, embedding AI into content discovery will fundamentally reshape how audiences engage with programming across both live and on-demand formats.
A Competitive Shift in Streaming
The move by Reliance and OpenAI reflects a broader global trend of integrating conversational interfaces into media consumption. Major players are rapidly pivoting to AI-driven discovery to improve user retention:
- Netflix: Began testing a ChatGPT-powered search experience in May 2025 to assist viewers in content selection.
- Google TV: Introduced Gemini-powered discovery features in November to simplify navigation for its user base.
Expanding the “OpenAI for India” Initiative
This partnership is a cornerstone of OpenAI’s aggressive “OpenAI for India” strategy. As the company prepares to open new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru later this year—joining its existing New Delhi location—it continues to solidify its infrastructure and enterprise footprint in the region.
Beyond JioHotstar, OpenAI is actively collaborating with several Indian industry giants, including:
- Tata Group: Developing AI-ready data centers and enterprise-grade deployments.
- Strategic Tech Partners: Ongoing agreements with Pine Labs, Eternal, and MakeMyTrip to broaden AI utility across different sectors.
The India AI Impact Summit served as the stage for these announcements, featuring high-profile industry leaders such as Sam Altman, Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, and Google’s Sundar Pichai, all discussing the future of AI integration in the South Asian market.
