TikTok is significantly enhancing its accessibility features, announcing on Wednesday the rollout of AI-generated ALT text for photos, a dedicated high-contrast mode, and integration with device-level bold text settings. These updates aim to create a more inclusive environment for users with visual impairments and those requiring specific interface adjustments.

Automated Descriptions and Visual Enhancements
While TikTok introduced manual ALT text support for photos several weeks ago, the new AI-driven update automates the process. When creators fail to provide descriptions, the system will now generate ALT text automatically. This functionality ensures that users relying on screen readers receive spoken descriptions of visual content, aligning TikTok’s capabilities with platforms like Instagram, which has utilized AI for ALT text since 2018.
Furthermore, the platform is introducing a high-contrast mode. Found under the “color contrast” option in the app’s accessibility settings, this feature intensifies the foreground colors of icons, text, and various UI elements. This change is specifically designed to assist users with low vision or sensitivity to low-contrast displays.
Improved Readability and Device Integration
Beyond visual contrast, TikTok is optimizing text legibility by adhering to system-wide settings. The app now supports device-level bold text preferences, automatically displaying in-app text in bold if the user has enabled this setting on their smartphone. This ensures a consistent and readable experience across the user’s entire device ecosystem.
In an official blog post, the company emphasized its commitment to inclusivity: “We see accessibility not just as a responsibility, but as an opportunity to innovate and foster a more inclusive platform for our global community.”
Expanding an Existing Accessibility Suite
These latest additions complement TikTok’s existing library of accessibility tools, which already includes:
- Auto-generated captions for video content
- Dedicated dark mode
- Text-to-speech functionality
- Adjustable text size preferences
By continuously integrating these features, TikTok aims to ensure that all users, regardless of their physical or visual requirements, can engage with content and share their stories effectively.
