Ahead of Google I/O, the tech giant officially unveiled Material 3 Expressive, a major evolution of the Android design language. Debuted at the Android Show, this update shifts the focus toward fluid, highly customizable, and emotionally engaging user interfaces, set to roll out with Android 16.
Fluid Animations and Immersive Depth
Material 3 Expressive introduces “springy” physics-based animations designed to make device interaction feel more natural. Whether dismissing notifications, closing apps, or adjusting volume sliders, users will experience subtle haptic feedback and detach transitions that simulate physical depth.

The interface also utilizes background blurring to maintain user context, ensuring that navigation feels consistent and immersive across the entire operating system.
Personalization and Live Updates
Building on the foundation of 2021’s Material You, this update expands dynamic color theming and typography. These visual styles will now propagate across core Google applications, including Gmail and Google Photos, allowing for a cohesive aesthetic across the user’s digital workspace.
Functionality is also getting a boost with enhanced Quick Settings customization, enabling users to prioritize essential actions like “Do Not Disturb” or “Flashlight.” Furthermore, the new Live Updates feature—similar to iOS Live Activities—will provide real-time progress tracking for delivery, ride-share, and navigation apps directly on the home screen or lock screen.
Wear OS: A Seamless Circular Experience
Google is extending Material 3 Expressive to Wear OS, optimizing the interface for circular displays. The design language introduces scrolling animations that trace the watch face edges and a new system of buttons designed to “hug” the display for improved touch accuracy.

Key updates for wearable devices include:
- System-wide Color Theming: Watch face themes now apply to the entire system and supported Google apps.
- Optimized Tiles: Improved interaction design for quick access to information and fitness tracking.
- Responsive Feedback: Smoother transitions and motion-based feedback for media controls and pin pad usage.
These design enhancements are scheduled to arrive on Pixel devices with Android 16 and on Pixel Watch devices with Wear OS 6 later this year.
