AltStore PAL, the alternative iOS app marketplace enabled by recent regulatory shifts in the EU and Japan, has officially integrated into the fediverse. By adopting the ActivityPub protocol—the backbone of decentralized social networks like Mastodon, Threads, and PeerTube—AltStore PAL has become the first federated app marketplace in the industry.

Bridging App Discovery and Decentralized Social Media
The fediverse operates on a network of independent, interoperable servers, allowing users to communicate across different platforms seamlessly. By launching its own Mastodon server, AltStore PAL is transforming how developers engage with their user base. Instead of relying on traditional walled-garden notifications, developers can now broadcast news, critical updates, and alerts directly to users’ social timelines.
This integration means that users on Mastodon, Threads, or even Bluesky (via account bridging) can follow these updates directly. “If you have a Mastodon or Threads account, you could follow the source from our server and see app updates in your timeline,” explained co-founder Riley Testut.
Enhanced User Interaction within AltStore PAL
The synergy between the marketplace and the fediverse extends beyond simple notifications. AltStore PAL is embedding social functionality directly into its app interface. Users can sign in using their existing Mastodon or Bluesky credentials to interact with content, “like” specific applications, and engage with news alerts without leaving the marketplace environment.

Marketplace Growth and Regulatory Hurdles
Several apps are already leveraging this federated approach, including the short-form video platform Loops, the YouTube-alternative PeerTube, and the independent Mastodon client iPhanpy.
While the platform is expanding, some major developers are adopting a wait-and-see approach. These developers are currently navigating the transition of Apple’s financial structures in the EU, specifically moving from the controversial “Core Technology Fee” to the new “Core Technology Commission.” This shift in Apple’s policy, prompted by intense regulatory scrutiny, remains a key factor for larger developers planning their entry into the federated marketplace.
How to Access the New Features
Users interested in following the latest updates can connect via the official AltStore Mastodon server or browse the catalog through the AltStore PAL explore page. To mark this milestone, the marketplace has also rolled out a visual overhaul, featuring the new “iOS 26 Liquid Glass” design language and updated iconography.
