Strategic Expansion into South Asian Quick-Commerce
Global ride-hailing giant inDrive has officially acquired Pakistani quick-commerce startup Krave Mart. The all-stock transaction, which received formal clearance from the Competition Commission of Pakistan, marks a definitive step in inDrive’s strategy to transition from a pure-play ride-hailing app into a comprehensive super-app offering grocery and commerce services.
Building a Regional Grocery Powerhouse
Founded in 2021, Krave Mart has established a robust footprint in Karachi, Rawalpindi, and Lahore. The startup leverages a network of specialized dark stores to execute grocery deliveries in approximately 30 minutes. This acquisition builds upon a prior investment made by inDrive in December 2024, which served as the precursor to their current integration.
The Path to a Super-App Ecosystem
The move is part of a broader capital deployment strategy. Since November 2023, inDrive has utilized its dedicated venture and M&A arm to allocate up to $100 million toward bolstering its super-app ambitions. According to Andries Smit, Chief Growth Businesses Officer at inDrive, the company is already scaling its “inDrive.Groceries” brand in Lahore. While the company pursues expansion, both the inDrive and Krave Mart brands will maintain operations in Karachi.
Market Challenges and Competitive Landscape
Breaking into the Pakistani grocery delivery sector presents significant hurdles. The market is currently dominated by Foodpanda, a subsidiary of the German delivery group Delivery Hero, which has held a stronghold in the region for over a decade. Industry analysts note that the quick-commerce model is capital-intensive, often requiring extensive time and investment to achieve meaningful profitability, creating a high barrier to entry for scaling operations.
inDrive’s Global Reach
Despite the competitive intensity, inDrive maintains a strong global position to support this pivot. Data from Sensor Tower indicates that inDrive is the world’s second-most downloaded ride-hailing app since 2022. With over 400 million total downloads, the platform ranks as the fourth-most downloaded travel app globally—trailing only Google Maps, Uber, and Waze. Currently operating in more than 1,000 cities across 48 countries, the company holds the top spot for ride-hailing downloads in nine nations, including Pakistan, Egypt, and Peru.
