Apple announced on Tuesday a strategic $500 million investment in MP Materials, the United States’ sole fully integrated rare-earth mining corporation. This capital injection aims to fortify the domestic supply chain and accelerate the production of high-performance magnets essential for consumer electronics.
Fortifying the Texas Magnet Supply Chain
Under the terms of this deal, Apple has committed to sourcing American-made rare-earth magnets directly from MP Materials’ flagship facility in Fort Worth, Texas. This site is currently developing specialized neodymium magnet manufacturing lines tailored specifically to meet the technical requirements of Apple’s product ecosystem.
Once production reaches scale, these magnets will be distributed globally to address the surging demand for critical materials in the tech industry. This move significantly reduces reliance on international suppliers, positioning the U.S. as a central hub for magnet manufacturing.
Advancing Circular Economy Through Recycling
Beyond primary production, the partnership focuses on sustainability. The companies are collaborating to establish a state-of-the-art rare-earth recycling line at the Mountain Pass facility in California. This plant will process recycled feedstock, including components harvested from post-industrial scrap and discarded electronics, to be reintegrated into future Apple devices.
Innovation and Long-Term Strategic Goals
The collaboration extends to research and development, where both firms will work to pioneer novel magnet materials and processing technologies aimed at boosting overall magnet performance.
This $500 million commitment is a key component of Apple’s broader pledge to invest over $500 billion within the United States economy over the next four years. This initiative builds on the company’s long-standing sustainability efforts, which began in 2019 with the introduction of recycled rare-earth elements in the iPhone 11’s Taptic Engine. Today, Apple reports that nearly all magnets utilized across its hardware lineup are composed of 100% recycled rare-earth materials.
