Apple TV+ Bleeds Over $1B Annually: The Cost of Prestige – Ankor Tech

Apple TV+ is currently hemorrhaging more than $1 billion each year, marking the only unprofitable segment within the tech giant’s vast service portfolio. A new report from The Information highlights the significant financial strain the streaming platform places on Apple’s bottom line, despite its reputation for high-budget, critically acclaimed content.

High Production Costs vs. Market Reality

Since its launch in 2019, Apple has aggressively funneled capital into original programming, maintaining an annual content spend of approximately $5 billion. While the company managed to trim this expenditure to $4.5 billion in 2024, the return on investment remains elusive. The service has become synonymous with prestige television, featuring hit series such as Severance, Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, Silo, and Shrinking.

The Battle for Subscribers

Despite securing over 2,500 award nominations and wins, Apple TV+ continues to struggle in the race for market share. The platform faces stiff competition from industry titans like Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video, all of which boast significantly larger user bases.

While Apple maintains a policy of not disclosing official subscriber counts, industry estimates place the Apple TV+ user base at approximately 45 million. This figure pales in comparison to the industry leader, Netflix, which recently surpassed 301 million subscribers, underscoring the massive gap between Apple’s service and the broader streaming market dominance.
