Apple has officially increased the monthly subscription fee for Apple TV+ to $12.99, representing a 30% jump from the previous $9.99 price point. This adjustment takes effect immediately for new subscribers, while existing members will see the new rate applied 30 days following their next renewal date.
What Stays the Same?
Despite the monthly hike, Apple is maintaining current pricing for several key offerings. The annual subscription rate remains locked at $99.99, providing a more cost-effective option for long-term users. Additionally, the Apple One bundle—which aggregates various Apple services—will keep its starting price of $19.95 per month.
A Pattern of Price Increases
This latest change marks the third time Apple has adjusted the cost of its streaming platform since its 2019 debut at $4.99 per month. The service previously increased from $6.99 to $9.99 in 2023. These frequent adjustments arrive as the company navigates ongoing financial challenges within its media division.
According to reports from The Information, Apple TV+ currently faces annual losses exceeding $1 billion. It remains the only service within Apple’s portfolio that has yet to achieve profitability, trailing behind major competitors like Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video in total subscriber volume.
Focus on Content Quality
While the service works to close the gap in subscriber count, Apple continues to emphasize its high-end content strategy. The platform recently secured a record-breaking 81 Emmy Award nominations, with the hit thriller series Severance leading the charge as the most-nominated production of the year, as announced by Apple last month.
The company’s strategy remains focused on leveraging critical acclaim and industry accolades to retain its audience, even as it shifts its pricing model to address the platform’s significant operational costs.
