Audible Launches $8.99 Plan to Challenge Spotify Dominance – Ankor Tech

Audible, the Amazon-owned audiobook giant, officially launched a new “Standard” subscription tier on Tuesday, priced at $8.99 per month. This strategic move aims to capture a broader audience by undercutting its existing “Premium” service—which remains at $14.95—by $6, directly intensifying the battle for market share against Spotify.

What the New Audible Standard Plan Offers

The Standard membership provides subscribers with one audiobook credit per month from the platform’s extensive catalog. Additionally, members gain access to unlimited listening from a curated library, which includes a rotating selection of Audible Originals.

However, there is a critical distinction in content ownership compared to the Premium tier. Under the Standard plan, users lose access to consumed audiobooks if they cancel their subscription. Conversely, the Premium plan allows users to retain their audiobook library permanently, regardless of membership status.

Beyond audiobooks, the Standard tier includes access to nearly 200 popular titles from the Wondery+ app, as the standalone Wondery+ service prepares to shut down in the coming months.

Global Expansion and Market Strategy

Audible is rolling out the Standard plan in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, and France. According to the company, early testing in the UK and Australia yielded a double-digit increase in new member sign-ups, signaling strong acquisition and retention potential. Audible announced that further market testing is already underway.

“By expanding our membership options, we’re maximizing access for lighter listeners while enabling publishers and creators to reach new audiences,” said Cynthia Chu, Audible’s chief financial and growth officer.

The War for Audio Supremacy: Audible vs. Spotify

The launch arrives as Audible faces mounting pressure from Spotify. Since integrating audiobooks into its Premium music and podcast bundles in 2022, Spotify has seen rapid adoption. Data from last October revealed that audiobook listening on Spotify rose 36% year-over-year, with over half of its 281 million premium subscribers engaging with the format.

Audible’s pivot to a lower price point coincides with Spotify’s third price hike in three years. By offering a more accessible entry price, Audible hopes to capitalize on potential subscriber churn from Spotify and attract “lighter listeners” who may have previously found the $14.95 price tag prohibitive.

With this expansion, Audible anticipates adding millions of new customers to its ecosystem, aiming to solidify its category leadership despite the increasingly crowded digital audio landscape.
