Former CNN anchor Don Lemon officially announced his departure from Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, on Wednesday. This move marks a definitive break in a volatile relationship that began with a high-profile partnership announcement less than a year ago and culminated in a pending federal lawsuit.
The Catalyst: New Legal Venue Requirements
Lemon’s decision to leave the platform was triggered by X’s updated terms of service, which take effect this Friday. The new policy mandates that all legal disputes involving the company must be resolved in a northern Texas court.
In a statement posted on X, Lemon criticized the shift, citing concerns that the venue change is designed to favor the company. “This ensures that such lawsuits will be heard in courthouses that are a hub for conservatives, which experts say could make it easier for X to shield itself from litigation and punish critics,” Lemon noted.
A Failed Partnership Strategy
The collapse of “The Don Lemon Show” is part of a broader, struggling effort by X to pivot toward long-form video content. Earlier this year, the platform courted various media figures, including Tulsi Gabbard and Jim Rome, in an attempt to challenge traditional broadcasting. Lemon initially expressed interest in the platform’s focus on “free speech,” but the deal disintegrated before a contract was ever finalized.
The Interview That Ended the Deal
Tensions reached a breaking point during an interview between Lemon and Musk, which was intended to be the debut of his new show. During the conversation, Lemon questioned the billionaire on sensitive topics, including his reported ketamine usage, opinions on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), and X’s content moderation policies.
As the line of questioning intensified, Musk grew noticeably frustrated, telling Lemon, “Don… Choose your questions carefully, you’ve got 5 minutes left.” Shortly after, Musk reportedly terminated the agreement via a text to Lemon’s agent, stating simply: “contract is canceled.”
Ongoing Legal Battles
The fallout has since migrated to the courtroom. In August, Lemon filed a lawsuit alleging that he was lured into a business arrangement under false pretenses. While Musk’s legal team filed a motion to dismiss the case in September, the litigation remains active as both parties continue to clash over the failed partnership.
