Dubai-based podcasting platform Podeo has secured $5.4 million in a Series A funding round to fuel its expansion into Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Southeast Asia. The startup, which has already amassed a base of 50 million subscribers, aims to replicate its success in the Arab world across other high-growth emerging markets.

Strategic Growth and Investor Backing

The funding round was led by Oraseya Capital, the venture capital arm of the Dubai Integrated Economic Zones Authority. Additional participants included Ibtikar Fund, Cedar Mundi Ventures, Samarium, iSME, and returning investor Razor Capital.

While global podcast listenership has surpassed half a billion people, many emerging regions remain underserved by major platforms. Podeo intends to bridge this gap by leveraging data that highlights significant engagement in markets like South Africa, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, where listeners are among the most active globally according to YouGov research.

From Crisis to Catalyst

Podeo’s journey began as a side project called “Fallound,” conceived by CEO Stefano Fallaha during his high school years. The platform initially struggled to gain traction in the MENA region due to a lack of compelling Arabic content. However, the 2020 Beirut explosion served as a critical turning point. As the community sought ways to share stories, prayers, and messages of hope, the app became a vital hub for authentic storytelling, solidifying its role as a space for healing and connection.

Podeo provides end-to-end production tools, allowing creators to edit, design, and monetize audio content within 24 hours.

A Focus on Creator Empowerment

Recognizing the production hurdles faced by creators, Podeo evolved into a comprehensive suite of tools. The platform now offers end-to-end support for audio editing, sound design, and branding. Furthermore, the company is shifting its business model to become entirely free for creators, removing subscription fees to lower the barrier to entry.

“We refuse to let subscription fees stand in the way of unlocking potential,” said Fallaha. “We are committed to revenue models that empower creators—like memberships, tipping, and tokenization.”

Decentralized Distribution Strategy

To overcome the challenge of limited app-based listenership, Podeo has adopted a decentralized distribution strategy. By integrating its SDK into third-party platforms—such as the card game app Jawaker and various in-flight entertainment systems—the company meets users where they already consume audio.

This approach allows Podeo to deploy programmatic ad-tech across multiple channels, providing brands with optimized reach while creators gain access to audiences far beyond traditional streaming apps. With this hyper-local strategy, Podeo aims to maintain a competitive edge over international incumbents by addressing the specific supply and demand dynamics of emerging economies.
