Facebook officially announced a suite of AI-powered features this Tuesday, aimed at boosting user expression and platform engagement. The update introduces animated profile pictures, AI-driven photo-restyling for Stories and Memories, and dynamic animated backgrounds for text posts, marking a significant shift toward a more interactive, Gen Z-friendly interface.
Transforming Profiles with Motion
The new animated profile picture tool brings static images to life by applying motion effects. Users can now have their profile photos perform actions such as waving, forming a heart shape, or wearing a virtual party hat. Meta advises users to select clear, forward-facing portraits for optimal results, with the ability to pull images directly from a device’s camera roll. The company confirmed plans to expand the library of animation options throughout the year.

AI-Powered Visuals for Stories and Memories
Facebook is also leveraging Meta AI to overhaul its Stories and Memories features. The new “Restyle” tool allows users to reimagine uploaded photos by applying specific themes—such as anime, illustrated, glowy, or ethereal styles—via text prompts or preset options. Beyond stylistic changes, users can adjust lighting and mood, or replace backgrounds with virtual environments like cityscapes or beach scenes.
Dynamic Text Posts and Feed Updates
To increase visibility within the news feed, Facebook is rolling out animated backgrounds for text posts. By selecting the new rainbow “A” icon, users can choose from various scenes, such as rolling ocean waves or falling leaves. Meta has indicated that seasonal backgrounds will be added to the rotation in the coming months.

Targeting a Younger Demographic
While Facebook maintains a massive scale with approximately 2.1 billion daily active users, the platform has prioritized initiatives to capture the younger demographic. These AI integrations are part of a broader strategy to modernize the flagship app, complementing recent updates like the friends-only feed and unique display names for Groups, which mimic community-focused platforms like Reddit.
Additionally, the platform is attempting to revitalize its classic “poke” feature. By introducing a dedicated button on user profiles that triggers push notifications, Facebook is betting on nostalgia and renewed social interaction to keep its user base engaged.
